One in the morning before I go to school and another right after school. Taking a shower helps me relax and prepares my body for school work.

In taking a bath, the usual rituals are expected: the lathering of soap on the skin, the brushing of teeth and the shampooing of the hair. One of these bath conventions I violated and that is the shampooing of the hair.

Back when I was in high school, I hate it when my hair is fluffy and smooth because the application of hair gel and hair wax becomes more difficult in the sense that the hair just won't settle. It happened to me that I overused the hair gel and it felt uncomfortable and sticky during the entire day. What I did is to stop applying shampoo on my hair. It solved the fluffiness but I am faced with the problems of odor and stickiness. Only then that shampooing the hair once even if you take a bath twice helps. I can get to wax my hair easily without the bother of odor and stickiness.

Sometimes, I don't apply wax anymore. Like today, my hair has become rather longer so it settles better.

Hair.

maybe I should get a hair cut.

Pepeng and the Evening News

My eyes were set on evening news because of the anticipated Pepeng storm when I heard the News Anchor comment on a news report about the mass wake of the poverty-stricken victims of the typhoon Ondoy.

The news anchor said "Kawawa..."

I find it off that this news anchor would comment that way. It is like adding insult to injury. I do think that some of the victim's situations are nakakaawa but to magnify that on air is a stab to their collective dignity.

I think news anchors and all media personnel should inhibit sharing their affections and/or opinions on air. They should only deliver the news as it is. They should feed the information-thirsty people the what, when, how, why, who.

Opinions should be aired on some other program and not a news program. That is why I think newspapers are better. Now this is significant compared to the days of gloomy mornings which I grew accustomed to for the past weekend. The storm had finally tempered, or so I think it did.

I was primed to fix all my undone schoolwork. I knew that the class suspension bought me more time to study. After so much thought, I decided to send the letter needed for a requirement in our Comm 3 subject. Jeepneys seemed to be abounding the streets again so I thought there'll be no transport problems.

I instinctively brought my digital camera with me. I don't usually bring my camera in fear of getting it lost. I was to travel the length of Welcome Rotonda to the street of Padre Faura. UST, Quiapo and Taft in between. The jeepney didn't pass by Recto. I'll soon learn why. It crossed Sta. Cruz and to my surprise, the area is still flooded!

The image on the left is the actual photo taken earlier this afternoon. Flood here could have been worse considering that the storm wrought havoc last Saturday.

It took me an hour to get to my destination. I passed by UPM to check if CAS and the white colleges are still intact.

After getting my business done, I went home. Again, jeepneys are dominating the Taft Avenue so I thought that the Sta. Cruz waterworks is an isolated case. But is it?

From Lawton, I could see that cars and public vehicles are jamming again. Then we passed by Quiapo then Recto. Only at this time did I learn why the jeepney driver needed to cut Recto and went inside Sta. Cruz instead.

Recto was transformed into an Olympic size swimming pool!

Shown in the left is the MMDA efforts of sucking the water out from the Recto underpass. I remember passing by that underpass every single school day of college and I never thought it could be made nonfunctional.

The jeepney driver I had earlier had a companion to whom he is having quite a good chat with. His friend is quite old, judging from the surface of his skin and the color of his hair. I overheard him saying that in his lifetime, Ondoy must have been the worst storm that wrought havoc in Manila.

Green Nobility

Day 5, OHPC

Last Friday is my 5th day of my One Hundred Pesos Challenge. All along, I thought I had a good week to start with but, unfortunately, I didn't. There is a good reason for losing though.

======================================
Record

Temptation Prevailed . . . . . . . . . 1
Determination Triumphed . . . . . 4

======================================

As what my record says, I only spent more than a hundred pesos last Friday. I had a winning streak for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday was exceptional because I was at school at around 7am and went home at 11pm. I know I will get myself into these situations soon but heck! This is just the beginning of the challenge!

Green Nobility

On the same day, probably the very reason why I had to stay in school for 16 hours, a special meeting has been called in UP One-Earth. UPOE is one of the organizations that I am involved in. The meeting is qualified as special because we have guests from Dakila. In their site, they defined themselves as

...a group of artists, students and individuals committed to advocating social consciousness formation among both their industry peers and their immediate audiences. DAKILA recognizes that Philippine society is in the midst of a significant upheaval and that, as disciples of the creative act, we are not exempted from the responsibility of helping contribute to positive change.

The reason for their visit is to request UPOE's partnership in touring environmental causes inside our campus in line with the biggest environmental concert that will simultaneously occur in over 70 nations across the globe in anticipation of the make or break UNEP summit in Copenhagen.

My orgmates are excited about their offer. Of course we love to partner with all the organizations we can to usher a cause for the environment. We'll wait and see how things will eventually turn out.

To know more about Dakila, click here.

On Disturbing One's Self

Just a few minutes ago, I listed all the school work I have to accomplish for the long weekend ahead. I don't know if it's just me but I have this propensity to make a list of things longer. Perhaps, school work is so numerous that I feel unmoved by the tasks ahead.

But sometimes, no matter how much you tell yourself that you are going to get things done, you end up goofing off and unable to accomplish anything. The root of this problem may probably be the lack of concentration or focus.

Any simple distraction can prevent you from doing your work well. Sometimes it's a headache, sometimes a flying cockroach, the sound of UAAP basketball on the TV, hunger pangs, brown-out. Just about anything and everything.

The only secret to remain focus is to sustain interest in what you do. Interests drives you with excellence effortlessly. When you are deeply interested with your work, it will no longer be work but a play.

I may be speaking from my experience but I know there are a couple of people out there who experiences the same thing.

Now, I have to find interest in studying because I need something to drive me.

Now I know why the dark ages...

This morning, I had a class on Communication III under Prof Adeva. We were tackling Self-concept then and it was mentioned that adapting to the changes in the environment could improve the concept of the self. She then set a conversation about when is the idea true. A special example was drawn from students from a Catholic high school who experienced the diversity of religion in UP.

A number of students who were from Catholic schools shared their insights about it and I didn't want to be left out. So raise goes my hand and on cue, my prof acknowledge my willingness to recite.

I shared my first experience with Christians.

During my first few weeks in college, I had this innate desire to belong in a religious group. I just had to because I'm fresh from a Catholic high school. Perhaps with some conceitedness, I didn't expect that I will encounter any other religion beyond Catholic. Back then, I was rather very eager to answer any questions that questions the set of faith to which I subscribe. I was eager to debate. Somewhat proud as if I'm a crusader for God's kingdom.

Then the opportunity to belong to a religious org came. I didn't inquire much, perhaps I had my own expectations of what a religious is like and so I went for it. It wasn't an initiation to the org though, just what seems like a general assembly. I have to say, the people there seem approachable, they seem to be good-natured and would cause no harm. Anybody in their company will feel delighted. But something about the groups makes me feel uneasy and just to make it clear, perhaps it wasn't because of them, it was because of my catholic orientation. The org is oriented for christians.

I had to say that I was caught by surprise when I learned that it was a christian org. Again, I wish to emphasize that these thoughts came from within. I felt like I was bordering towards enemy territory then. It felt like I'm betraying the religion I'm subscribing to for 15 years.

A friend of mine had, perhaps, noticed this religious conceit that I have. He notices whenever I describe other religions irrevelently. It has seaped in to my unconscious that my religion is the correct religion and others are bullshit.

Now, I think I underwent conversion but not in the Catholic sense.

UP environment has taught me how to belong in a community of diverse beliefs. I know a number of atheists in the campus. I learned to be sensitive towards other religion but some of my unconscious conceitedness are still making themselves manifest. I'm no longer surprised much if I have a seatmate whose face is covered in cloth or a classmate who is always in a long skirt every single day. I sometimes understand why the prof has disapproving remarks about the theory of evolution eventhough he/she is a Biology teacher.

Perhaps after adjusting to the new environment, then I had peace inside.

Please don't mistake this blog entry as hating my religion. All religions are filled with imperfections from my view. Mine is no exception.

With that, please enjoy this mind-blowing music video from Green Day!

Day 1, OHPC

Day 01 of the One Hundred Pesos Challenge.

======================================
Overview
Amount Spent on Food . . . . . . . . . Because I was growing conscious of my BMI, I felt compelled to action. And that action is to challenge myself not to spend beyond 100 pesos for food on a school day. There could be no better time to manage my weight since we also have this weight-loss program at our local college. Because of that and because of the desperate attempt to come up with something to blog about, I feel motivated.

Perhaps at this point, the objective is clear. I can only spend 100 pesos for food. Getting food for free doesn't make me violate my sworn statement. I don't get much food at home because most of them need cooking and I am the earliest person to wake up in bed. Add the fact that I can't cook much so rest assured I go to school with only bread and hot choco. But my strategies to accomplish my goal need a seperate blog entry so we will stop with this.

As for today's experience, I think I was able to manage because the stress week of exams and all is over. From my related entry, I mentioned that stress contributes to me being a chow-king and now that there is a significant decrease of stress levels, my hunger pangs were benign. In fact, at the moment that I am writing this blog entry, I feel unstressed. Evidence to the fact that I am unstressed is me being able to make a blog entry for 3 straight days.

So, I was able to get over Day 01, More hurdles to come. I'll end this blog entry with a music video from one of my favorite bands, Bamboo.

Hale sounds like Hell

This blog entry was long postponed. Hale's fourth album was launched last August 14, 2009 at the Sky Dome of the SM City North Edsa.

During their hit The Day You Said Goodnight, I already noticed something wrong with how they wrote their song. Then comes Blue Sky, my observations were confirmed. Most of their songs are just words. They don't really mean much and to add insult, their figurative language fails. It's all music, quite similar to the songs of Sandwich. But Sandwich songs are feel-good music. Their songs are the likes you would like to play on the road trip to a beach or what. In Hale's case, quite the opposite. Seems like it is a feel-bad song with all the break up and unreciprocated love.

Now they are on their fourth album, I am inclined to change my position on their songs because their fourth album is consistent with my observations. Perhaps I am missing something about their songs. I checked the Lyrics of their new single Bahay-Kubo,

Alam Mo Ba
Kung Saan Tayo
Tutungo
Ilang Gabi
Na Tayong
Nawawala
Halika Na...
Bakas Sa Labi Mo
Pagod
At Uhaw
Hanggang Kailan
Tayo
Maglalakbay

Halika Na
Doon Tayo Matulog Sa Gabi
Hindi Kita Iiwan
Yakapin Mo Ako
Sa Bahay Kubo

Sa Dilim
Huwag Kang Matakot
Matulog Nang Mahimbing
Malapit Na
Bukas
Mamumula Ang Langit

In the song, from how I interpret it, they are lost in the first verse. They seem to be helplessly lost by the description of pagod and uhaw. Then comes their refuge, the bahay kubo. Though I am quite reluctant why the bahay kubo be the site of refuge in the song. It's not really the archetype for peace unlike heaven. That's the entire point of the bahay kubo, as refuge. Come the night, perhaps knowing that the bahay kubo cannot protect them from anything since it is not heaven, the persona resorted in to consoling the person not to be afraid because he/she is there.

Not bad for an interpretation. But one little detail must have been overlooked. If you are lost in a completely isolated place, what is the bahay kubo doing there! It seems that they were lost in a not so lostable place, not unless the place is abandoned.

Good enough, atleast I was able to interpret a hale song that before I thought is rather twisted. Maybe they are improving their song writing skills. Any way, their Music Video is embedded below. The music video poorly shows the lyrics though. There is actually no bahay kubo in there.

All sounds, all show.

Allowance is directly proportional to Body-mass-index

Yesterday, I tried the futuristic body measurements machine, the ones you find inside Mercury Drug Stores. So in goes my five pesos and to my surprise, my BMI (body-mass index) is 26.8! When I was a freshie, I am certain that my BMI falls on the 24 point something. Just a little before my overweight threshold of 24.9. Now that I'm a sophomore, my BMI rose by 1.9!

No wonder many people were telling me that I got plump. My friends, whom I saw eons ago, immediately notice how much I gained. It's like my most noticeable feature. Even my dad warned me about gulping too much beer as it bloats the gut. Interestingly, I myself am quite aware that I am taking in more than I should and perhaps I can blame only two things that could have conspired to destroy my adonic physique.

1. Stress

I never thought that UP manila could be ever so stressful academic-wise and org-wise. I think I need to mention my second year-first sem as the climax of my academic stress ... so far. Back when I was a freshie, I didn't juggle my notes from my left hand to the right. My room looks so disorganized now and the OC in me makes me crazy about it. Atleast in my suffering, there is always a pizza bread to cheer me up, a glass of Iced-tea to tap my back and say, you can do it! And I reply with a grateful bite and sweet mastication.

2. Money

This is perhaps the main culprit of all. The evil that hides underneath the nationalistic icons. One of the manifestations of Jose Rizal's elitist social class (Come on, he's on the peso coin). The glittering metal that makes the world go round.

The peso.

Back when I was a freshie, my allowance is around 200 pesos a day. I got a small raise from my high school allowance of 150 a day which is reasonable. Back then, I don't photocopy tons of readings, I don't eat at Robinson's place manila, so with 150, I could save a lot. Come my second half as a freshie, I got a 100 pesos raise because I always find myself short on money. That is a total of 300 pesos a day.

One might think that I should have saved a lot by now since I'm really having more than I should really need, but no. The excess money that I have compels me further to act like a brainwashed consumer. Or perhaps my metaphor is rather askew, being a zombie seems appropriate since I respond brainlessly towards food.

So it is not surprising that an excess of purchasing power among people could increase their weight. In my case, I am spending about 200 pesos a day on food alone. Sometimes, I even spend much much higher. It has been a year since I got my raise and if my assumption that allowance is directly proportional to body-mass-index is correct, my BMI could shot up by 1.9 again next time I weigh in.

And so, I am to launch the challenge for myself.

I, Jerome Villacorta, Citizen of the Republic of the Philippines, do solemnly swear to spend only 100 pesos on food each day in hopes of reducing my BMI for aesthetic and health reasons and to perform this challenge to the best of my abilities.

Yeah! Atleast this blog is back. It has become a struggle to write something these past few months because of school work but now, I do hope I found a reason to blog.

I'll update you on this challenge.

Fingers forced

Of no clear motive for writing
Fingers forced to tinker the keyboard
It has been a while
...

(Tinatamad na magBlog, need some motivation)

Classes Begin Tomorrow!

It's official! As I step foot beyond the threshold of the UP manila campus, I am born again as a sophomore. Yeah! SECOND YEAR! Wohoo! Surviving the First year was like a trial similar to those free anti-virus softwares available on the net. My one year trial has expired and it's time to subscribe to the better version.

This coming semester would be my most jam-packed sem ever! My schedule for my subjects are a little rough but, thankfully, my vacant time makes it possible for me to engage some extra-curricular subjects.

My batchmates have this impression that I am a dork. A GC person who doesn't give a damn about stuffs that do not have any academic incentives. They maybe right. I realized that good grades give me simple delights. Sometimes, when the grades are too good to be true, I'm overjoyed. But I also strive to become a well-rounded student. That is to say that my academic duties goes side-by-side with my extra-curricular activities. I didn't join my school orgs because I was hoping I could get something material and/or academic credit from it (believe me, sometimes orgs are the reason for failure in some subjects). The only incentives that I look forward to are joy and experience.

There are three things that I found essential in balancing your academic and extra-curricular activities. One, whatever happens, Acads are a priority. Your organization has to understand that your group is composed of students that are awaiting a promising future. Based on my experience, when a major exam is scheduled for a day, two days before that, there shouldn't be any activity. Last time I had an extra-curricular activity before an exam, I failed the exam. Next, when two organizations cross your schedule, prioritize the most urgent one. There are a number of factors that may contribute to this like time, and stuffs. Last would be the inspiration. You have to LOVE what you are doing (yes friends, there is some abstract concept in orgs. Keep the interest intact because it is your sustaining-base.

Sorry for the last paragraph. It may look like it wasn't that much researched. I think I will post a separate blog entry on this. Since I have the authority now, I might as well do it like a pro.

Watch out for that!

A(H1N1) and Facial Masks

Extended vacation will be over soon. This week-long extension was due to the increasing number of confirmed A(H1N1) viral infection in the country. Last night, the evening news reported that in a span of 3 weeks, the number of confirmed A(H1N1) infections in the Philippines rose from 1 to 92. People might mistake the instant increase to be a sign that there is a rapid rate of human to human infection in the country but it may otherwise be interpreted as the result of the proactive contact-tracing of the Department of Health.

Medical and social concerns aside, this blog entry is reserved for the precautionary measure of wearing a mask (surgical or any mask that covers the nose and mouth) vis-a-vis viral infection. Does wearing a mask really help? For our purpose, I googled it and found the answer from the top result.

The site says that wearing a mask is found to be no helpful in preventing infection. It is recommended however, to cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough in public. The wisdom here is that covering your mouth stops the spread of any virus but wearing it does not affect your own immunity against the disease.

But given my idea of how a bacterium or virus could infiltrate the body (thanks to commercial ads by the likes of Lysol), I think I will still wear a mask come the resume of classes. My school is just a stone throw away from the De La Salle University. I might run into a DLSU student in some public transport.

Come to think of it, perhaps the real reason why they do not recommend wearing masks n public is because it may wreak fear among them. I may feel bad to cause fear to the commuters but I feel worse if I caused the spread of this dreaded virus.

Strikes back!

The person from my previous post replied within a day! To read it, click here His reply was rather more disappointing this time. He said:

villa214, salamat.

As always, I am more knowledgeable than this one, I responded:

In fact, Altwegg, UPCM, other than the Return Service obligation, offers a regionalization program called Regionalization Students Organization (called RSO). Aspiring UPCM students may apply to this program in which they will sign an agreement that they will return to their province of origin to practice medicine. A local government official's endorsement is needed to get through this. Students apply for RSO because it increases their chances of getting admitted to UPCM.

If you are paying attention to fortherecord's cut and paste posts, had it not become apparent to you that the barrios and far-flung provinces is exactly what UPCM are targetting?

SHS in Leyte-Samar
SHS in Baler, Aurora
Health program in San Juan, Batangas (Public Health students like me cannot graduate unless I undergo a 4-week fieldwork in this place.)

The Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, the social work arm of the university, has conducted hundreds of medical missions across the nation since its establishment in 1993. From Batanes, to Palawan, to Jolo, the Pahinungod has been there. I'm from the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod myself so I know.

And what makes you think that Metro Manila is well-off than the places you call 'baryo'? It is true that health service is more accessible in Manila than in your 'baryo' but, as Dr. Romualdez in his UP centennial lecture said, the greatest inequity in health care could be found in Metro Manila. More doctors that would cure the poverty-stricken sick is needed in the metro so the modest proposal of sending them to the 'baryo' would make the sick health care system worst.

I could only agree with you about your opinion in monopoly and all that stuff. I am quite unsure, however, of what you mean by public service. Does your public service fall on the likes of Mel Tiangco's? As far as I see it, to describe the Health Sciences Center's efforts as public service is rather an understatement. It is more of a commitment in securing Health-for-All.

I'm not into school bashing, really. With the exception of the last paragraph, everything was intended to inform. I just can't let anyone go with a lack or wrong information of my alma mater.

and Altwegg [the name of the person at the forum] , too little information is a dangerous thing.

Misinformation about the UPCM return service

All aspiring physicians in the UP college of medicine will be subjected to years of return service where they will stay to practice their medical knowledge. As always the case, when people get into school bashing to prove which school is best (usually it's UST, Ateneo, DLSU and UP), they tend to twist or, in this case, truncate the information to suit their argument. Here is an example from one of the school bashing threads of pinoyexchange.com/forums

Maganda ang panukalang return service ng UPCM pero ayon sa kanilang depinisyon nito, "return service, which may be in the form of public service, research, or private practice in any part of the Philippines" at nito "as part of the return service, a graduate may choose to undergo post-graduate residency and/or fellowship training in any government institution in Metro Manila or in any public or private institution outside Metro Manila," hindi ba't ito naman talaga ang magiging kinahinatnan ng mga doktor?

Since I am more knowledgeable than this guy, I am compelled to reply.

As for the bold-faced text, it's a thumbs down.
It is not always the case. The purpose of the Return Service obligation is to inhibit the exodus of Filipino physicians to places like the United States where the financial compensation is much much better. Though it is true that these physicians may get involved into research or get admitted for residency, the obligation states that it must be done inside the country and nowhere else. Plus, it also stops UP physicians from taking up nursing after getting an MD degree as there is no provision that they can do it after they graduate.

Which means, all 160 future physicians will be bound to the country for a couple of years.

I hope I improved your understanding of the program.
PS:

I am not into school bashing. It is a childish past time. I replied because of a desire to correct his understanding about the program and make this world a better place.

Books and Bureau of customs, an unfortunate alliteration

First of all, if you share in the conviction that books should be rendered tax-free, kindly sign this [petition].

I haven't read nor purchased any book lately perhaps because of my school work but I am compelled to write something about books. This sudden desire was due to the recent agitation of Filipino bloggers towards the idea of imposing taxes on imported books. I'm not really sure if I understood everything about the issue. What I am certain about is, if books will be taxed, I may not have a shelf filled with books like what is illustrated in the photo to the left.

From what I read, (and honestly, it is only now that I learned about this) all the imported books that we have been reading are tax-free, be it imported or local. Books were even exempt from the implementation of the Value-Added Tax. This was in compliance to the 1952 Florence Agreement which obliges the signatories to render the importation of books tax-free so that there will be a free flow of ideas. Now, undersecretary Espele Sales argues that these books have to be taxed giving rise to what has been called the Great Book Blockade.

My rough providence of information could be cured by reading the column about it. Here is the [link].

Now let's go to the opinion part.

I think the efforts of the government in increasing its revenues are commendable. Atleast that's what is being shown in television and news. I recall the government calling the E-VAT a bitter pill because of the relief it can provide after taking it. But I think, the issue is not about increasing the revenue of the government by imposing taxes on the books but the validity of undersecretary Espele Sales' interpretation of the Florence Agreement and the Acts passed by the government. Also, the imposition of tax on books will run against the government's consistency of rendering it tax-free. Do we have a fickle-minded government?

Had Sales been right, he might be considered a genius by identifying a mistake in an agreement which has been faithfully observed for the past half-century. Otherwise, he's a fool.

I think to solve this problem, efforts in clarifying the issue must be done. Here is a [link] containing an entry about the Florence agreement entry.

So do we have a genius or a fool?
If he is a fool, more geniuses might be spawned.
If he is a genius, our future geniuses might not have enough books to indulge in.

_______________________

I have plans to go to medicine. Numerous people must have been waiting for the film as evidenced by the almost crowded theater. Or perhaps they couldn't figure what to do on a Friday night but learned that the Angels and Demons was now in theaters. It's not a difficult decision to make after all.

I am not about to discuss the details of the movie in this blog for the sake of people who hate spoilers. If you have plans to watch the movie, all I can say is that it's worth your money. It is a number of times better than the Da Vinci code. My friends and I were speechless after watching the movie (I didn't read the book so I have no idea about the plot.)

Watch it! Actually, it was a series of quizzes, each quiz after a laboratory experiment report. She deliberately held a quiz without warning us about it perhaps to test how well did we comprehend the report of our classmates (it was a drowsy afternoon that time). And so, to improve the mean score of the class, she asked questions that will merit bonus points.

The questions are quite manageable. Some of the questions require attentiveness to details during the report. But come the most bonus among all questions, I stuttered, stared blankly, wondering if my pen on my fingers would write down a response. She asked:

Among the American Idol finalists, who would you like to compete head-to-head?

Years of ignoring these kinds of television shows served me right. I have no idea at all! Well, I learn about their existence when their songs begin to get played on the radio. I know Kelly Clarkson, the two Davids - David Cook and David Archuleta, I know... uhmm... I know... ( looks at americanidolyear8.blogspot.com) .

I'm a an absolute dummy when it comes to American Idol. In fact, I didn't know that the show is running on it's 8th season. It's only now that I regret failing to watch atleast one episode of this show. I regret it cause I didn't get the bonus point.

David Cook and David Archuleta will be having a concert on May 16 in the Philippines (I learned it from Magic 89.9 radio. I guess I still have a life). The American Idol fever surely caught the americanized Filipinos. As for an americanized grade-conscious dork like me, May 16 will be just like any other Saturday.
______________

I had my third departmental exam in Chemistry today. I think I was short on practice. I wasn't confident enough for the exam. Oh well, looking on the brighter side, atleast it was a learning experience.

Sheesh. I was having a grade of paramount quality and this exam may just push my grade down the mountain.

iBlog5: The Philippine Blogging Summit

This year's iBlog was a welcomed respite from my school work in UP Manila. It felt like a breeze of fresh air caressing my nape. I felt uneasy, however, in the crowd of successful bloggers since I am starting from scratch. I've been blogging for around 2 years already but my most successful blog would've remained successful if it wasn't mismanaged (or UNmanaged). I'm starting to accomodate what ifs in my gray matter now. What if I didn't stop blogging?

Oh well, that would be a separate blog entry.

I woke up this morning with only the iBlog5 event on my mind. I was excited. In fact, I registered 3rd among the hundreds of people who attended the event. It took place at the Malcolm Hall, also known as the UP College of Law building. Registration begins at 8am, but I was able to register earlier.

I came alone but in a sense, I'm not the lone alone. So we're companions in our loneliness. Pun aside, I was able to meet some new aqcuaintances in the person of Ramon and Manolo. Ramon had some company but I think I'll mention him anyway (comment here Mon, if you happen to pass by).

So the formality's routine followed after the registration. There was the National Anthem, the Invocation and the Welcome Remarks by Ms. Janette Toral. Then came the topics for the morning session in the following order

1. Blogging 101 - There was a blogging 101 last year. Or I thought there was. Perhaps the iBlog admin wants to make iBlog newbie-friendly.

2. Photoblogging - Yeah, there is a photoblogging last year as well. I think I like the last year's photoblog talk.

3. Videoblogging - The flippish character Ms. Kring Elenzano was the speaker. I'm just unfamiliar with her partner.

4. Mobile Blogging - A domain that I haven't penetrated yet. Perhaps because of my school life, I could utilize the power of my phone to blog!

5. Do's and Dont's of Blogging - Benj Espina's manner of delivering this subject characterizes him very much. It seemed like he was debating and some of his 'philosophy' really does characterizes egoism. I know his partner Mr. Juned Sonido from last year's iBlog4.

Then came the afternoon session

1. Legal Issues in Blogging - A subject which educated me much last year. Atty. JJ Disini was the speaker for the same topic last year.

2. Preparing Bloggers for 2010 elections - This topic seemed to be the main event of the iBlog5. They invited the COMELEC-EID director James Jimenez to talk about bagongbotante.ph. Chronicling the 2010 election interests me. Perhaps I will consider adding some political element in my blog.

3. Blog Marketing and Advertizing: Experiences in the Philippines - These are the topics that I thought I learned enough but couldn't get it to work.

4. Blogging to the next level - This is how iBlog wanted to end it's fifth year: to blog to the next level. Though I have much to do to level-up, insights from this summit could serve as a trampoline that could catapult me a notch higher from now.

So there it was. The gathering of bloggers in the Philippines, old and new alike. Let's hope that there will be an iBlog6 next year, hopefully it is still free, and hopefully I could get a shirt next time.

overdoing number two

Why does chem lab have to be frustrating.

Because of the heavy rain last night, I was not able to prepare well for our qualitative analysis today. The procedure seemed so long that my aching brain could no longer comprehend the steps. So I did what seemed to be the best cure for head aches - sleep. But this curative snoozing off has dire side-effects.

The next morning, I tried to read the experiment again but it seemed that I could no longer understand it better than last evening. I shrugged my shoulders and asked myself what could possibly go wrong?

I asked the wrong question, didn't I?

During the experiment, the shifting of turns from the sole pH meter was frustrating. Like the reaction mechanism in chemical kinetics, that part of the experiment was our rate determining step. We couldn't get to the next step without testing and adjusting the pH of our solution. We can't proceed until we have adjusted our pH to 0.5. It sounds easy enough but the pH meter takes time to read the pH of a solution.

The most frustrating part, where I felt everything is becoming hopeless, is the spillage of our solution not once, but twice!

That said, we were only able to identify one out of the four unknowns.

Experiment resumes on monday. By that time, I hope to learn all the unknowns. I hope I do. :D

I'm overdoing it again. This is my blog entry two days in a row.

Good Enough

Yes, I'm overdoing it!

The grade-conscious bastard in me is jumping for joy after a series of fortunate events that started yesterday. If you are expecting some nostalgic blog entry that narrates how those events came to be, I'm too excited for that so I'll just tell you that I'm acing my chem exams!

Wohoo! Overjoyed!

It was, however, short-lived. The Chem lab exam this evening was difficult. At least the problem solving part was manageable but the multiple choice was a mind effer! Crossed-fingers, I hope I did well.

On top of that, it rained so hard today! The avenue of Espana assumed it's role as the UST's Olympic-size swimming pool during heavy rains like this. I have to wade in the water to get home. This is her/his thread:

Hello everyone!

I recently graduated from HS and i'm torn between 2 universities and courses.

which do you think is better: BS Public Health in UP Manila or BS Nursing in UST?

*I'm planning on pursuing medicine (but there is no assurance because medicine is expensive). So I need a course that is a good pre-med and will also provide me with a good career even if i don't get into med school. Please reply. Thank you.

He/she posted this at May 3, 2009, 10:04 PM. It is rather late to inquire if you ask me but I did not mind. I was excited to respond to his/her mail and after reading some responses like public health = med tech, I felt obliged to cleanse that mortal mistake in the perception of the field of public health.

This was my response dated may 5. :D

Hi! I'm an incoming BSPH sophomore from UPM.

First, let me tell you what the program is. Many have the mistaken notion that Public Health is JUST LIKE Med Tech. Though it is true that after graduation, you are qualified to take the Med Tech board exams, to equate the value of Public Health to Medical Technology is rather over simplifying things.

Yes, Public Health is not simple. As my Public Health professor in my college said, BS Public Health is a multi-disciplinary program encompassing the fields of parasitology, nutrition, medical microbiology, health promotion and education, health policy and administration, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health.

It's just like the Behavioral Science program (also a program in UPM) in which Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology are combined into one program (there exists a BA anthropology, BA Sociology and BA/BS Psychology).

Second, If you are pursuing medicine, I'll bet my pet dog in claiming that BS Public Health is the best program to get to medicine (next of course to Intarmed). There are two subjects in BSPH that can be credited to your med proper. That is a 2-subject advantage! You are ahead of your non-PH batchmates in med school.

Third, UST receives med applicants from PH. In my college, I have never learned of anyone declined of admission to UST-FMS. Another thing, in UPM, PH is second only to BS Biology in the number of UP College of Medicine acceptance. They don't have the 2-subject advantage though.

As for the career opportunities, I can't really say much because I am having trouble with that myself. I chose PH because I wanted to become a physician but now, I'm considering some Plan Bs and Cs. Just think of Public Health as taking the road less traveled. :D What Atitz said about the Nestle and stuff sounds reassuring though.

If I'm not mistaken, freshmen enrollment is on Thursday so better decide quickly. If you wish to learn more visit these sites:

whatispublichealth.org
thisispublichealth.org
pathwaystopublichealth.org

They are westernized though.

Hope you made the proper decision. It's your life anyway :D. It was recently pinned on the popular drama list of crunchyroll.com. Out of the 23 episodes, I have watched 12 and the suspense just keeps getting better!

I'm no TV person. I never faithfully watched a television series from beginning to end. This behavior may be accounted to my dislike of having to adjust my daily schedule only to miss no series. I hate it when I miss an episode. It felt like you miss a great portion of the development of the plot and when you get to the supposed climax of the drama, you can't make the proper connection because you missed the episode that should have connected everything. It felt hanging. That's why online video streaming sites are a blessing to me.

And while watching one episode of the Korean series, it occured to me where had the Filipino Dramas gone? I tried to search the net for any online video streaming sites that features Filipino or - for a more affectionate nomenclature - Pinoy dramas. My drive to look for Pinoy drama series shifted gear when I found an interesting forum on crunchyroll.com.

The title of the thread is "Why [sic] is [sic] Jdrama and Kdrama better than Pinoy Drama?"

Due to my colonial education and sudden desire to make things right, I felt obliged to correct the grammatical errors of the title and rephrase it for the purpose of this blog entry: "Why are Korean and Japanese drama series better than Filipino drama series?"

Perhaps, I'll leave that question hanging for now. When I get done with "New Heart", perhaps I could already tell.

Earth Day!

"Bakit sixty?,"I asked a fellow earth fanatic during the Earth Hour celebration in MOA last March 28. It was an honest question. Sarcasm aside, I do not know what the numeral sixty in the Earth Hour promotional ads meant.

"Tange, sixty for sixty minutes. Earth hour nga eh!"

That would have been the reply I needed to realize how slow I am in understanding these kinds of ads. The world of advertising despises me for that.

But come to think of it, it's a valid question. Though the sixty does stands for sixty minutes in the Earth Hour promo, a greater impact would have been achieved if we added 20 minutes, 40, 60 or 100.

My point is, "Bakit sixty kung puwede namang 100?"

I do know that SM's mall operation will be seriously affected if their malls' light were dimmed for more than an hour, but we can always have earth hours with lights on. In fact, every hour is earth hour.

Tomorrow, the world will be allotting not just an hour for earth advocacies but an entire day. In Manila, the biggest celebration will be held at the SM Mall of Asia again, but I doubt if they will turn off their lights for the entire day. Hundreds of pro-earth organizations must have been very busy preparing their own programs for tomorrow. Of course, expect politicians to be present in huge earth day celebrations now that there is only a year to go before the 2010 elections.

But I do hope that tomorrow, wherever you are spending your earth day, you ask the right question: "Bakit one day lang? Hindi ba, every day is an earth day?"

The day after Easter Sunday

Cars flocked Manila today. Add in the inconveniences of the water pipe construction along Dapitan street, it's a automobile driver's worst nightmare. Actually, these nightmares frequent the roadsters of Manila. Worst time to hurry for class would be 7 to 9 in the morning. Same old jeepney, same travel route, same faceless commuters, this day would have been an ordinary day except that today is the day after Easter Sunday.

And just before you begin to read the entire blog entry, I wish to make it clear that this is not a religious commentary on the lenten season.

As I have said, this day would have been an ordinary day. From the moment I woke up, I intended this day to be nothing extraordinary. So I went over my morning routine and rode the jeepney to UP manila campus, which, by the way, is still part of my morning routine.

I thought that my diabolical plan to make the day ordinary met opposition when I saw the water pipe work along Dapitan street causing traffic congestion that seemed worst than constipation. The jeepney driver was clever though, he managed to avoid the traffic by taking another route - the route brimming with people in a neighborhood. They didn't mind, I think. The driver was indifferent, I think. The ordinary day prevailed, I think, but did it?

When we finally reached Lawton, across the church of Quiapo, A woman called the attention of the jeepney I am aboard, seemingly interested to ride. The jeepney did stopped to let the woman in but she sat on the jeepney's rear entrance instead of the seats for passengers. It seemed that the woman was an almswoman after all!

The woman started to ask for alms from the passengers of the jeepney. An old lady did gave her loose coins but the woman seemed to want more so she asked the other passengers. None of them gave her a peso. To the driver's indignation, he took a few coins from his coin box and stretched his arms to give the coins to the woman. He did this hoping that the woman would go away but he was abashed when the woman haggled: " kuya, piso pa." This infuriated the driver, calling her names that are rated thirteen. The woman left but the old woman who gave her alms earlier started talking in favor of the almswoman. The driver was still mad and he couldn't help but to answer back. What followed is a well orchestrated symphony of cuss words so disturbing that even the non-involved passengers joined in the trouble.

I think I heard them invoke Christ.

What a scene to mark my day after Easter Sunday.

Rally time

Paunlad o Pa-show?

Parang may appointment!

kung ano man yun ano na iyon, it's for me to know and for you to know for yourself! Haha!

KNOWING!

Kaunting Kasaysayan
